The Whole School Approach Audit and Action Plan

The audit records your setting’s progress against the 8 strands of the whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing as described by Public Health England. These being:

  • Leadership and governance
  • Ethos and Environment
  • Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
  • Pupil Voice
  • Staff Development
  • Working with Parents
  • Identifying Needs and Monitoring Impact
  • Targeted support and Appropriate Referrals

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Award is endorsed by Genuine Partnerships. Each of the 8 strands of the audit support the key principles of the Four Cornerstones of co-production. These are: ‘Welcome and Care’, ‘Value and Include’, ‘Communication’, and ‘Partnership’.

You will be offered a development day to meet with other schools and education providers, where you will be supported to complete your audit. This will be followed by a 1:1 action planning meeting within your school, college or setting. The final submission of the audit and action planning work requires collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure all provision in school is recorded appropriately and that the targets identified inform school improvement plans.

The Ethos and Environment audit

Our ethos and environment audit will be carried out by our Engagement Lead, in collaboration with the Mental Health Ambassadors and/or other pupils from your school, college or setting.

The process offers you the opportunity to listen to student voice about the physical environment and ethos of your setting. Pupils will walk round the building with our Engagement Lead and be asked for their views on the safety and inclusivity of corridors, classrooms, and any dedicated wellbeing spaces within the building. They will also be asked about the accessibility of wellbeing information on the walls and noticeboards. The feedback will be shared with your setting and should be discussed with the Senior Leadership Team to inform the target setting process.

The Pupil Wellbeing Survey

Our pupil wellbeing surveys have been designed in collaboration with the Rotherham Educational Psychology service and are free to all our With Me in Mind schools, colleges, or settings. The surveys provide an opportunity to listen to student voice and gather information on key themes that may affect pupil wellbeing. There are surveys available for students in Year 6, Year 9, Year 11, and Year 13.

The wellbeing surveys cover three important areas of mental health and wellbeing and should be conducted with as many pupils as possible from the relevant year groups in your educational setting.

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Resilience (risk and protective factors)
  • Attitudes to school

The findings should inform part of the action planning process.

Focus groups

Focus groups offer you an opportunity to listen to the views of your wider school community. One or more focus groups should be made available to our team, which has representation from your staff, parents and carers, governing body, and students. A range of topics will be offered out for discussion within the group(s), to cover the 8 strands of the whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

  • Leadership and governance
  • Ethos and Environment
  • Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
  • Pupil Voice
  • Staff Development
  • Working with Parents
  • Identifying Needs and Monitoring Impact
  • Targeted support and Appropriate Referrals

Findings from the focus groups will be shared with your setting and should inform the action planning process.
